Peter O'Toole

7.11.12 - PETER O'TOOLE RETIRES

The classic British actor by way of Ireland, PETER O'TOOLE, whose signature role was in Lawrence of Arabia" some 50 years ago, announced yesterday his retirement from the craft of acting. Nominated for 8 Academy Awards for Best Actor, in films that spanned the range of roles and 44 years-Lawrence of Arabia in 1962, Becket in 1964, Lion in Winter in 1968, Goodbye Mr. Chips in 1069, The Ruling Class in 1972, The Stunt Man in 1980, My Favorite Year in 1982 and Venus in 2006-O'TOOLE never won an Oscar, but was given an honorary one in 2003.

At the time, O'TOOLE wanted to refuse it, saying he was "still in the game" to win one outright, but the Academy insisted they would bestow it on him show or no-show, and PETER graciously accepted the statuette.

The list of actors who bested him over the years reads like an all-time hall of fame-GREGORY PECK, REX HARRISON, CLIFF ROBERTSON, JOHN WAYNE, MARLON BRANDO, ROBERT DENIRO, BEN KNIGSLEY and FOREST WHITAKER.

PETER O'TOOLE had his hands and feet enshrined at Grauman's Chinese theater in 2011 as part of TCM's Classic Film Festival.

In a statement released yesterday, O'TOOLE said acting "brought me public support, emotional fulfillment and material comfort. It has brought me together with fine people, good companions with whom I've shared the inevitable lot of all actors: flops and hits." How humble, for one of the best actors to ever take the "stage".

President Bill Clinton

6.19.12 -President William Jefferson Clinton was in Los Angeles last week, to give the commencement address at Redondo Union High School, where his nephew, Tyler graduated. Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton was also in attendance at the Friday afternoon ceremony for the South Bay high school.

On Thursday, the former president took in some shopping, and mostly crowd pleasing, at the 3rd Street Promenade, in Santa Monica. He spontaneously popped out of a car, spent some time with the locals, shaking hands, posing for pictures, and then got back in the car and drove away. Kind of a nice surprise for a Thursday morning.

A FEW MINUTES WITH BILL CLINTON

I had not been having a good morning on Thursday, June 14. I was tired of my life and struggling with the on-going feelings related to standing up to a slumlord, reporting her to the authorities and being ordered to move by the city. Very painful.

Anyway, June 14. I had an appointment in Beverly Hills at 10AM and instead of going straight home had the gut feeling to walk to Wilshire, take the Metro bus to Santa Monica and spend some time on Third Street Promenade. As soon I got to 3rd and Wilshire, I noticed motorcycle police, and the unmistakable dark sedans of the Secret Service. I looked down the relatively empty promenade to see people standing and staring. I asked the man standing next to me what was happening. "It's Bill Clinton," he said. I looked down again and saw the shock of gray hair, the bright yellow shirt , and about six Secret Service agents surrounding him. Pres. Clinton was simply walking down the row of stores and waving at people eating their lunch or standing in shop windows. What is he doing? Is he buying a gift for someone? Looking for clothes? Meeting a friend for lunch? I pulled out my Iphone and began to walk as fast as I could to catch up with him. Suddenly, I needed to share this with everyone I knew and starting posting on Facebook. I looked around and noticed that other people had their phones out texting and taking pictures, but were keeping their distance.

Then, a young African-American man walked right past the Secret Service agents and shook the former President's hand. Suddenly, people realized that it was okay to approach him. Men with children walked up beside him to say hello. As each person got bolder, the crowd following President Clinton began to grow. I ran past a Secret Service agent to take the President's picture. I didn't even realize that was what I did until I turned around!

At Santa Monica Blvd, just two blocks from where he started, the dark sedans were waiting for President Clinton. He stopped in front of them and faced the crowd. He never said a word, just shook hands, took pictures and smiled. It was surreal. I had chills. What a random, thrilling moment! Someone behind me said, "He's a great man."

Too soon, President Clinton got in the car and they all pulled away. A woman visiting from Australia asked me if I could email her the photos I'd taken. We talked about what had just happened and how extraordinary it was. There were no press people there, no one to publicize his walk. What did he need from us? It reminded me of the scene in SOAPDISH when Sally Field and Whoopi Goldberg go to the mall so Sally Field's character can sign autographs and feel better about herself. I also thought of the classic SNL sketch with Phil Hartman as the then new President Clinton stopping at a McDonald's to chat with the patrons and eat off of everyone's plate.

I don't understand why this feels life-changing to me, or why it lifted me out of the despair I had been feeling earlier. But, it did and it does. I felt some hope after he drove away - hope thatanything wonderful can happen at any time and that is a true gift.
